The heart of developing a Community Center in western Uganda is to address the growing dilemma of HIV/AIDS in the area. Located in the Rwenzori Mountains, this area has seen sky-rocketing HIV incidences while at the same time a reduction of services. The community itself is currently home to 180 school-aged children with vastly under-resourced facilities. Some of the homes are led by children themselves whose parents have died from disease and the widespread violence toward the vulnerable.
Network Beyond is approaching these overwhelming needs in a variety of ways. One of the primary methods is through the Light of Africa Model School in Kabasindagizi.
An initial school building opened in 2010. This facility also serves as a community education resource center and medical clinic devoted to assisting and educating the local population in areas of HIV/AIDS support and prevention, clean water solutions, and other life skills.
Teachers are imperative to training these children who have little or no family. Supporting the key people in Uganda as they shape, influence, and train up the next generation of Ugandans is incredibly important. A gift of $1,100 would supply all seven teachers' salaries for one month.
Because the number of children who attend the school has outgrown the space, there is ongoing construction on a new facility. In addition, the school desperately needs a new roof--the current roof leaks heavily during the rainy season, making it hard to concentrate on studies. A gift of $4000 would provide a new roof for these children and their teachers.
